Classic car and truck enthusiasts were in automotive heaven Saturday as they viewed 44 entries to help make the first ever Classics and Class show a success, organizers said.

“It was a good stream of people, good vendors, and the downtown merchants worked with us well,” said Skip Lowery, one of the organizers of the car and truck show.

Sponsored by the Emerald City Fraternal Order of Police, the show drew over 50 entries, with 44 actually participating Saturday. Proceeds from the show are donated to Easter Seals, and also used to buy equipment for law enforcement departments.

Vintage vehicles dated from the 1930s to the present parked along two blocks of West Jackson Street. Patrons dined on barbecue, baked goods and ice cream under sunny skies as they walked among the entries:

Entries were judged in a variety of categories, including Best General Motors, Best Ford, Best Mopar, Best Classic Car, Best Street Rod, Best Muscle Car, Best Paint, Best Interior, Car Club Participation and Best in Show. The top 25 also received trophies.

Lowery thanked Scoops’ owner Josh Nichols for his help with the show, which also featured nine of his vintage Mustangs.

One glitch, said Lowery, was in how the awards were presented. Scoring was accurate, but organizers said the prizes should have been distributed among more of the entrants, instead of the majority going to the Best in Show winner, a green Impala.

“The mistake was unintended, the mistake was learned and the mistake will never happen again,” said Lowery.

He apologized to the entrants, and welcomed suggestions on how to make next year’s show even better. Lowery can be reached at skiplowery@bellsouth.net.

“We learned on this one,” he said. “If anybody’s got any suggestions we’d love to hear them.”
